Roofing in the Inner North: original terracotta and real character
The Inner North is where Canberra started β suburbs like Ainslie, Braddon and Reid carry homes from the 1920sβ50s, many with their original terracotta tile roofs. That changes the work: good original terracotta should be cleaned and repointed, not painted, to preserve both the character and the value of these sought-after homes. The challenges are age-related β perished bedding and pointing, the odd cracked or slipped tile, and lead flashings that need attention β but the tiles themselves are often beautiful and entirely worth saving.
