Roofing Services Canberra

Restoration, re-roofing, repairs, painting, cleaning, gutters and inspections โ€” every roofing service a Canberra home needs, from one ACT-licensed local team based in Giralang.

Roofing specified for Canberra โ€” not a generic checklist

Canberra asks more of a roof than most Australian cities, and it punishes the wrong approach. Winter frost and the freeze-thaw cycle prise apart old ridge pointing; summer hail cells crack brittle tile and dent metal; the dry inland heat bakes coatings until they chalk and fade; and the city's mature tree canopy keeps valleys and gutters packed with litter. A roofer who treats a Canberra roof like a coastal one gets the specification wrong โ€” the wrong pointing compound, the wrong coating, the wrong call on whether to restore or replace. The roof pays for it two winters later.

Everything we do is built around those conditions: flexible pointing that moves with frost rather than cracking, coatings rated for Canberra's UV and temperature swing, and a working knowledge of which districts carry which roofs โ€” 70s and 80s tile across Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong; heritage terracotta and slate through the Inner North and South; and new-estate Colorbond right across Gungahlin and the Molonglo Valley. That local detail is the difference between a roof that lasts and one that's back leaking by the next cold snap.

Restore, repair or replace? How we make the call

The honest answer depends on what's under the grime โ€” which is why every quote starts with us on the roof, not at the letterbox. This is the framework we use:

ย ๐Ÿงฝ Restoration๐Ÿ”ง Repairs๐Ÿ  Replacement
Right whenRoof looks tired but the tiles or sheets are structurally soundDamage is localised โ€” a leak, cracked tiles, frost-failed ridge mortarTiles are porous or hail-shattered, or metal is rusted through

Relative cost$$ โ€” a fraction of replacement$ โ€” the cheapest time to fix a roof problem is early$$$ โ€” the right call when restoration would be money wasted

Tile, metal or heritage โ€” we work on all of it

Canberra's housing stock spans a century of roofing materials, and each one fails โ€” and gets fixed โ€” differently.

Concrete tile roof restored and recoated in deep charcoal on a Canberra home

Terracotta & concrete tile

The default roof of Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong's 70s and 80s streets. Canberra's freeze-thaw cycle cracks rigid cement ridge pointing and old concrete tiles slowly go porous โ€” but the structure underneath usually has decades left. Restoration (clean, flexible repoint, membrane coat) is the workhorse fix; we replace only what's actually broken.

Fresh Colorbond metal roof with crisp ridges, hips and valleys

Colorbond & metal

The roof of Gungahlin and the Molonglo Valley's newer estates โ€” and the usual destination for tile-to-metal conversions. Metal shrugs off hail that shatters brittle tile, but surrenders to rust at fasteners and laps, and Canberra's temperature swing works screws loose over time. Caught early it's a repair and recoat; left too long it's a re-sheet. We do both, and tell you which yours is.

Restored terracotta tile roof with freshly repointed ridge capping

Heritage terracotta & slate

The Inner North and Inner South's early-Canberra homes carry original terracotta and slate that deserves better than a coat of paint over the problem. We work with period-correct materials and repoint ridge capping the way it should be done โ€” preserving the roof's character while making it weathertight for Canberra's frost and hail.

Choosing a roofing service โ€” common questions

The questions we get before a job is even scoped. For service-specific detail, each service page has its own FAQs โ€” or see the full FAQ page.

Do tile and metal roofs need different treatment?

Completely different. Canberra's frost cracks rigid ridge pointing on tile roofs and hail cracks brittle old tiles outright, so tile work is about re-bedding, flexible repointing and membrane coating. Metal fails differently โ€” rust at fasteners and laps, lifted screws after wind โ€” so the fix is fastener replacement, rust treatment and the right metal-rated coating. Same local team either way; we just specify for what's actually on your roof.

A hailstorm just came through โ€” what should I do first?

Get the roof looked at before the door-knockers get to you. Canberra hail cracks brittle tiles in ways you can't see from the ground, and storm-chasing operators quote big on fear. We inspect, photograph the actual damage, and give you a written itemised quote โ€” documentation that's also exactly what your insurer will want to see. Then you can decide calmly whether it's a repair, a restoration or a claim.

Can you quote from photos I send through?

We'd rather not, and you shouldn't want us to. A photo shows colour and grime; it can't show whether tiles are porous, pointing has let go underneath the caps, or the battens are sound โ€” which is precisely the difference between a repair, a restoration and a replacement. The on-roof inspection is free and the quote that follows is fixed, so there's nothing gained by guessing from a photo.

Is winter a bad time to book roof work in Canberra?

Not for most of it. Repairs, gutter work, re-roofing and inspections run year-round โ€” and winter is exactly when leaks show themselves. The one weather-sensitive step is coating: membranes need dry, frost-free days to cure properly, so restoration jobs get scheduled around Canberra's weather rather than rushed into it. Booking an inspection in winter puts you at the front of the queue, not the back.

Can extras like skylights, whirlybirds or new gutters go into the same job?

Yes โ€” and if you're thinking about them, a restoration or re-roof is the cheapest moment to do it, because the access, safety setup and crew are already there. Skylights, ventilation, gutters, fascia and roof plumbing all fold into the one itemised quote, so you can see what each addition costs and pick what's worth it.
